The San Francisco Art Institute is a unique gem within the city. Constructed in 1926, the structure—a series of buildings entered through a baroque arch into a cloistered courtyard with a bell tower incorporates elements of both Italian and Spanish colonial styles. Built of rough board-formed concrete, originally painted ochre to resemble adobe, the structures are topped by terra cotta tile roofs, with floors of brick, terra cotta pavers, and concrete.
